Mexico

Eric and I decided to take advantage of the long weekend last week and take a trip down the Baja Penninsula of Mexico. We left Reese with my sister and parents because we were concerned that it wouldn't necessarily be safe for her, nor did we know that we'd be able to find food that she would eat and that wouldn't make her sick. I was SO sad to leave her, I'm VERY attached, but it was a very good idea and allowed us to have a trip without children, which I'm guessing won't be happening for quite sometime again. Plus, Reese had a blast! Daniel, Eric's brother who lives with us, came with us and it was such a fun trip.

We left Wednesday around 3 pm and drove to Vegas. We stayed at Eric's sister Kristen's house and then left from her house early on Thursday morning. We started Hunger Games on our way to Vegas and almost finished it, so we had to make a stop at Wal-mart in Paris, CA to get the 2nd and 3rd books to read on the rest of the trip. I love reading books on roadtrips, it seems to be my only chance to get into a book. I was thinking in Hunger Games language and mindset like the whole trip, it was weird.

We spent a little time in Ensenada, where I got some replacement sandals because the soles in my rainbows finally wore through. We walked through the city and got some delicious tacos and tortas.
We drove to La Bufadora, which is a place where the seawater explodes out of a blowhole in the rocks, but sadly never saw what we went there for, it must only happen when the tide is higher up or something. We did however drive through a street market that was very touristy, but we were the ONLY tourists there so we decided not to stop so we wouldn't be bombarded with people trying to get us to buy their stuff. We did however take a picture from above the market though.
Our destination for Thursday was Erendira, a beach west of San Vicente. We showed up in the evening, talked to some people from CA, who were there to teach a surfing class over the weekend, and then found the owner of the beach, paid him a small amount of money, and he loaded our car up with firewood. I'm so glad Eric speaks Spanish, I really just wouldn't do a trip like that without someone who spoke good Spanish. The owner was this cute old man who didn't care that we pay him anything to stay there, quite the opposite of what I thought we'd encounter.
That night we had a campfire and I got really sick from the lunch we had eaten in Ensenada. Luckily it was quick passing, at one point I thought my water broke, it was that great :) I was nervous I was going to be sick the rest of the time but after an hour or so, I was good as new.

In the morning the guys decided to go out boogie boarding. I decided against it since my belly is rather large. I did however join them to snorkel. The water was FREEZING. At first I was wearing my dad's shorty wetsuit because of my inability to fit into my normal wetsuit. It wasn't cutting it though because the legs, arms, and neck were loose so I had a constant current of ice cold water flowing through. I ended up squeezing into Eric's full body wetsuit with a hood and booties, and then was able to enjoy being out in the water. This was such a different experience for me. I've never snorkeled where the water is murky, there are rather large waves, and it's freezing. Eric and Dan on the other hand are born snorkelers, surfers, etc. They grew up on an island and spent LOTS of time in the ocean exploring. I was nervous, thinking about the hammerheads my sister-in-law had mentioned come around in the fall, so Eric held my hand and then I wasn't so freaked out. I'm a wuss, I know.
Here are my cool little mexican sandals.

And here is our picturesque campsite. There was no one in sight, but sadly I didn't take a pic of the campsite until the fog started to set in.
After snorkeling on Friday we took off to Guerrero Negro, which is quite a long ways away from San Vicente. Especially with all the winding roads and the road work which deverts you onto dirt roads that no 2 wheel drive could make it on. We stopped at the Mercado to get some juice, water, and snacks, and then went to a restaurant where we had delicious food. They started us off with a vegetable soup, then brought out our dinners. Eric had yellowfin, I had chicken tacos, and Dan had fish burritos. I prayed and prayed I wouldn't get sick this time around and thankfully didn't :) We got a hotel for the night and were happy to get showered up, even if there was a little hole in the bathroom ceiling above the shower that made me nervous we were being spyed on.

Did you know that there are frequent military stops on the highways, where you have to stop, the military men have you get out of your car and they check everything for weapons, drugs, and explosives? I was nervous for this, but it ended up being not scary at all. They are more than professional, and totally nice.

On Saturday morning we drove to our final destination: Bahia Concepcion. It didn't let us down. It was beyond beautiful! We drove to some of the different beaches to see where we wanted to stay the most. We decided on Playa El Burro. I would recommend this place if you're headed down that direction. Look how gorgeous!

The campsites are these awesome little palapas with palm roofs. The weather here was SO warm. It was 95-ish and humid, of course. First thing we did was get changed into our swimsuits, gear up with snorkels, masks, and fins and head out into the water. The water was maybe 2 or 3 degrees cooler than the air outside, it was surreal! We headed out into the water, which is completely beautiful and clear and snorkeled for 3 1/2 hours. We saw all kinds of cool tropical fish. We saw rays, starfish, Dori from finding Nemo, tons of different kinds of colorful fish, and many other kinds of cool sea life. Like I previously said, I haven't spent much time in an ocean and this totally blew me away. There were no waves, the water was warm and clear, and there were all kinds of cool things to see, who wouldn't be impressed?
After the above mentioned 3 1/2 hours of snorkeling we decided we were hungry. There is a restaurant at the beach called Bertha's Restaurant. A totally chef-looking, hospitable woman, Bertha, runs it. She cooks, waits, hosts, and cleans up after you. We LOVED her! She even brought a fan over to our table when she saw I was pregnant. She made us the BEST fish and shrimp tacos EVER! We had to get a second round after we were already stuffed because who knows when the next time we eat there will be.
After eating we went back out and snorkled for a couple more hours and collected shells for Reese. Tell you what, that is a lot of fun, especially when there are exotic looking shells.

The plan was to stay overnight, but Bertha told us that it would be just as hot at night so I probably wouldn't be able to sleep very well. We decided to get changed and just start driving, since we had a long drive ahead of us to get back home. We stopped at the Mercado in Guerrero Negro once again to get some more juice and snacks and then we cooked some Johnsonville Brats out in the parking lot. One night we thought it might be fun to buy stuff at the market and make our own dinner. But then I saw the meat section of the grocery store. EW! Totally bloody, warm, and flies all over. We brought the brats along with us from the USA, no worries :)

Eric drove through the night, I stayed awake with him, while Daniel slept maybe 18 hours straight :) We got through the 2nd book "Catching Fire" and part way through the 3rd, "Mockingjay". We took a couple of breaks to sleep for an hour or two. I was grateful for the military checkpoints, because it gave us a chance to get out of the car, walk around, and get a little joking in with the military men. One of them even asked me, in Spanish, if we were carrying any "armas" or in english, guns. I picked up on what he was saying and joked that we didn't have any except my muscles. He told me to flex again and then he felt my muscles. Yep, I felt cool, because I joked with someone who didn't speak the same language as me ;) But like I said earlier, these military checkpoints weren't scary at all.

On our way back to the border we stopped at a town that had a huge swap meet going on. It seriously was HUGE. We walked through it for about an hour. I was hoping to find something for Reese, but it was filled with people's old clothes and then Aeropostale, American Eagle, etc brand clothing. It was fun to walk through though and see what everyone was trying to get rid of.

We decided to take the scenic route from Ensenada to Tijuana. It is the no toll road, and way prettier than the one you have to pay to drive on. We had some mangos in the cooler we had picked up at one of the fruit stands and took a break to eat them before we got to the border.

We stopped in Vegas Sunday evening, hoping to stay at Kristen and Bryan's house again, but they were still gone on vacation and their house was all locked up. So we drove to St. George and stayed at this hotel called the Sands Hotel that we've for some reason always wanted to stay at. We got dominos and just relaxed for the evening, we knew we wouldn't make it to Provo so sleep deprived.

Monday morning we had a hard time pulling ourselves out of bed but were excited to get the driving over with. We stopped at Meadow hotsprings on the way home and snorkled. Not at all close to as cool as what we were doing 1 1/2 days prior. We got back to Provo in the early afternoon on Monday. I was SO excited to see Reese. She was out with my parents shopping when we got to their house, so I anxiously waited until they got home. When they drove up the driveway I ran out to my dad's truck and opened the door next to her carseat. She just stared at me with a huge smile and big eyes. I was so glad to see she hadn't forgotten me and was excited to see me. She even wanted me to just hold her for a few minutes before she was off to dig in the dirt in my parents' backyard.

Some favs...

Got me a beach cruiser and a bike trailer :) Been wanting a beach cruiser ever since my mountain bike fell off the back of our car last year going 80mph. And been needing (can I say need instead of want here?) a bike trailer so Reese can go on rides with me since we all know she LOVES to be out and about with mom, and I really like her company as well.

Eric gave me this beauty. I've never owned a stylish watch yet I'm very much a watch person. I always have some sort of sporty looking watch but let's not lie, a large faced heart rate watch isn't the most stunning accessory on Sundays or date nights.

And finally....Eric surprised me with this! A camcorder! (I obviously need to get on the ball and start surprising him with some things.) I've been wanting one so bad ever since we had Reese and I always feel guilty not having one to record all the cute things she does. Now I can record her and her many talents :) I love watching old family videos and now she too can look back on videos of her and enjoy watching what she was like when she was younger.

Snowbird 2010

Each year we get to go up to Snowbird for a fun filled day for my mom's work. This year was a lot of fun with Reese being old enough to enjoy everything.

The weather was beautiful and we had so much fun spending time with my family.
I feel so blessed to have such a fantastic family!

Reese had so much fun on the toys this year. Chelsea took Reese on the slide and was so cute making sure none of the other kids trampled Reese while she made her way up the ladder to the top of the slide. It was so funny to watch Reese go down the slide, she'd just start running as fast as she could down the slide and eventually fall over and slide the rest of the way down. She was in HEAVEN!!

She also LOVED the bounce house!

Reese is at such a fun age. Sometimes I miss the time when she would be happy just being carried around in a front pack all day - because let's face it, that is a whole lot less work, but it is fun seeing her experience the world. I can't believe how much she is growing up!

Monkey Child

Leave her for one second and she's into something :) I love the little busy body!

Gateway

I love taking Reese to the Gateway to play in the fountains. Eric and I took her a week or two ago and enjoyed the time cooling off and watching Reese enjoy herself so much. There are so many fun things to do in Salt Lake. Afterward we went to Liberty Park and walked over to a big crowd of people. It ended up being a "hippie" gathering with people playing drums, dancing like lamanites (or at least me and Eric picture them that way), and smoking who knows what. We stayed in the "family friendly" zone and Reese ate cheetos with and played on bikes of this cute little hispanic family sitting in front of us. They saw her struggling out of our arms trying to make her way over to their toys so they invited her over and were so friendly to her!

Reese is little miss independent so she kept running to the farside away from us to play. I'm trying to figure out how to fix this because pretty sure it won't be so easy chasing her down with a baby in tow. Lately I've been "allowing" her to run from me and then just watching her to see what she does. For the most part she eventually makes her way back to me, but sometimes she just keeps on going and I know she'd get lost if I hadn't been watching her. It scares me having her be so independent. I'm uber paranoid about someone kidnapping her or her making her way out the doors of a store or something. WORST NIGHTMARES!!

Bear Lake 2010

Ever since my dad was young, his family has had a tradition of going to Bear Lake in the Summer. The group that attends varies slightly but mainly consists of my Grandpa, 4 or 5 of his best friends, and all of their posterity/inlaws/etc. It ends up being a really big and fun group.

This year I was sad we were only going to be able to stay Friday - Sunday. I should've been happy with that because our trip was shortened by my getting sick. I'm prone to bladder infections and sadly got one on Saturday. If you've ever had one you know there is no relief and they get worse and more painful by the minute. I intended to take my camera down to the beach our second day but we had to get home so I could get my antibiotic, so I stole some pictures from friends' blogs/facebooks.

All the little kids adore Eric. He has that personality that just draws people to him, and these little sweet Moffatt girls got him to build sandcastles, paddle boat, and take them on rides on the wave runner.

Reese was in heaven all day! She didn't have a nap but just played and played and played in the water and sand.

I'm sad that Bear Lake was so short but we did have a lot of fun. I'm glad I went home (not like staying was an option) because the infection traveled into my right kidney and I began having crazy braxton hicks/borderline contractions and I thought I was going to die Saturday night. I was so scared because infections that travel to your kidneys can cause premature labor - NOT what I want. Thanks to a husband who is a worthy priesthood holder, and a loving Heavenly Father who allows worthy priesthood holders to pronounce his blessings, we were able to have a neat experience and I was finally able to find relief and get some sleep.

Bebe

I don't quite know what Reese thinks of the whole "baby in my belly" thing. When I ask her where her baby brother is she points to my belly. She'll also give my belly kisses when I tell her to give the baby a kiss. However, despite all my efforts I think she is going to be quite surprised when we bring home a baby in November.

I have such mixed feelings about having a second child. Part of me is sad because I of the unknown of splitting my time between two kids but then another part of me of course is excited and happy to have another sweet little angel. I get nervous thinking of my inadequacies. Can I really be a good mom with 2 kids? But when I remember my savior then I know I can do it if I trust him. He will make up for my inabilities and help me have the strength, energy, and love for any kids he trusts me with. He'll show me and Eric how to raise them.

Lately, whenever I see a newborn I get more and more excited to have such a precious baby again. Newborns are just so precious! My sister's friend gave me a garbage bag full of baby boy clothes, my goal this evening is to go through them and then write out of list of things I still need to get. It is kind of hard though because what sizes do I get? I have no idea how big or small he is going to be. Maybe I'll just make the list, get the basics, and save the rest of the shopping for after he is born (when it will be that much harder to go shopping :)).

Antelope Island 2010

Last weekend we went to Antelope Island to camp. We had fun there the last time we went (and I was pregnant with Reese) so we decided it'd be a fun place to go again (this time pregnant with baby boy) - maybe we'll make a tradition of it :)

First off we drove to see all the buffalo. They were really close to the road and there were TONS of them. They were cool to watch, I can't believe how HUGE some of them are.

We then drove to our camping spot and found that it was occupied by an older couple sipping wine watching the sunset. We visited with them for a few minutes and then enjoyed the sunset ourselves - minus the wine.

One thing I had forgotten about Antelope Island is its immense population of spiders. They are HUGE spiders and come in every shape and color. We read the sign about them - they are orb spiders (meaning they spin spiral webs)but aren't poisonous and won't bite...unless provoked. I HATE spiders, but luckily these ones leave you alone, you just have to watch your every move so you don't run into one of their massive webs (which are pretty much everywhere).

Look at all those spiders hanging from the gazebo. There are signs saying to stay on the road/trails. They don't even need those signs, the spiders do the job of keeping you from wanting to wander anywhere but open spaces where they haven't spun webs.

After a restful night of sleep we had some granola bars and capri suns and then headed down to the beach. Reese loved playing in the sand but wasn't too fond of the water except when we were holding her. I guess having sand between your toes while walking unsteadily and being swarmed by brine shrimp isn't Reese's idea of enjoyable time in the water?

Reese is a dirt/sand/rock LOVER. She'd play with these elements all day long if allowed. On our way back she licked her hands and started giggling/smiling and then repeatedly licked them. I licked mine to see what was so exciting and found that it was the saltiness she was enjoying so much.

My hunk of a husband carried Reese on the way back from the beach. I was ever so grateful for him and his muscles because I was sweating like a pig trying to make it back through the sand in the sun. If I were alone we would've taken 15 minute breaks every 2 minutes - because although that girl is little, I'm already overloaded with weight I'm not used to and she just adds an extra 20:)

We played following the leader and sang the "We're following the leader, the leader, the leader..." song from Peter Pan. Reese thought it was fun for a couple of minutes....

But then those little legs just gave out! It's just so hard having short legs :)

Here is a picture of our campspot, for memory's sake. I always love camping with my little crew. This weekend - Bearlake, posts to come...

Last of the days at my parents

Eric and I are quick to act when we make a decision. We knew we were going to need to find a place before September but 1/2 way through July decided that we should look for a place to move by the beginning of August before all the students come back for fall and before I'm more pregnant (and less able to help lift things) and he is in school and working full time (meaning I'd be pretty much in charge of the move). The day we decided, we looked for places on line and then drove up to SLC to look at them. Well, the first one we looked at ended up being "the one". We got everything signed, the utilities switched over to our names and then moved everything in. It has been a whirlwind of constant moving, finding furniture, painting furniture, decorating, organizing, etc and we still aren't done. The last week definitely has been fulfilling as we've gotten everything (other than the few things we forgot) moved in, got the place furnished, got flooring taken care of, and most things organized into place. There is still a lot to do, all the nitty gritty details, but it's a lot of fun now.

We love the area, the yard, the close vicinity to any store you can think of (more on that later)but I am definitely missing the constant friends (my family)the dirt pit and pond for Reese to play in, the naked summer days (Reese, not me) in a fairly secluded backyard, and only making dinner 2 or 3 times a week :)

Camla celebrated her 14th birthday the last week we were living with them. Can I just say my dad is such a good dad. My mom was out of town for work (she was devastated about missing Camla's birthday) but my dad filled in perfectly. He made sure her day was full of fun and then took her camping/fishing/kayaking just the two of them. He's such a gem of a father!

Camla is one of my very best friends. You wouldn't know we were 10 years apart by the way we can chat it up and hang out. She is extremely thoughtful and is always concerned more with how other people are feeling than her own feelings, definitely WAY more selfless than I ever would have thought of being at her age. She loves on her nieces and nephew like there is no tomorrow and is such a good person. She gives me hope that even though my kids will be growing up in a world where sin is so acceptable, they can still be faithful and righteous people and rise above the filth.
